When referring to wine you often hear the experts refer to a particular wine region as a terroir. This refers to a particularly wonderful combination of one or more vine varieties, a specific microclimate and soil type, and the correct wine processing for these elements.

Médoc and Graves
This terroir is composed of stoney and gravely soils, typically described as masculine and complex. The area includes the Baronne's left Bank, which covers a narrow 150 m long band of excellent vineyard soil, composed of gravel and stones carried by the river from the Pyrenees Mountains. This is the ideal spot for Cabernet Sauvignon, and even boasts Crus Classés that are valued like works of fine art.
Saint-Emilion and Pomerol
Covering the area around Libourne, this terroir includes the AOC's from he Dordogne's Right bank. Featuring soil of clay and limestone with bands of pure porous limestone, it receives good sunshine. The result is both Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon do very well here. In certain Appellations of the area Merlot can constitute 80% of the planted surface area due to its exuberance. Definitely of the best Merlots in the world, and typical of this terroir.
